Mayans settle around these because of the drinkable water. Yes, they sacrificed people there but that's because one of their main god's was Chac - God of the Rain. Heat is so intense where they used to live that if there wasn't any rain, crops died and people suffered. So they asked for help to their god by offering human lifes and valuable stuff, throwing virgin women and gold in these wells. Nothing really mystical about it, just desperate people. Oh, and I have one of those wells bellow my house in the Yucatan peninsula, they are pretty common around here.
